Adaptogens (aka. Superherbs) are healing plants that help your body respond to stressors. They literally ‘adapt’ your body to cope with stress better. Holy Basil (Tulsi)
Not the same as the basil you’d top a pizza with, but they are related. Holy basil is highly regarded in India, where it is believed to symbolise a Hindu goddess. If it’s good enough for goddesses, surely we can benefit from it! Tulsi can help your body to fight fatigue & stress, as well as boosting your immune system. Used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, it can regulate your immune system, ease anxiety and contribute to healthy sexual function (go get ‘em tiger!). Ashwagandha also aids the body in lowering cortisol. Cortisol is your body’s stress hormone – so lowering your levels of it can only be a good thing. Ashwagandha usually comes in a powdered form, allowing you to sprinkle it into whatever you fancy!
Rhodiola, also known as Goldenroot, is a very popular adaptogen. It’s been used by athletes, the military – even Russian cosmonauts. You can see why – it’s known to relieve anxiety, combat aging and protect organs. Similarly to Ashwagandha, it supresses production of the stress hormone cortisol. What’s also great about this herb is that it aids in weight loss – great if you’re slimming down. You can buy rhodiola in powder form or in ultra-convenient tablets.
