Do you ever wish you could turn back the clock and invest in Netflix before it introduced its video streaming product? Of course you do. Investing your time and energy in the following movements is the gym’s equivalent to an early Netflix stock. Only these movements will continue to provide a steady return on your investment for a long time.

The gym is a lot like the stock market. You need to know where to invest your currency for the greatest return on your investment. Currency in the stock market, of course, is money. Currency in the gym is your time and energy. Both are finite, and both need to be spent wisely.

There are a lot of choices, but some will provide a much greater return than others. The main difference between investing in the gym and investing in the market is that I can tell you exactly where to invest your currency in the gym for your greatest return. This type of insider information sharing just doesn’t fly in the stock market. To begin, compound movements: A compound movement is any exercise that uses more than one joint. An example of a compound movement would be a squat, because it uses both the knee and the hip joint. For the sake of contrast, an example of a single joint movement would be a biceps curl, because it only uses the elbow joint. Both compound and single joint movements are great and they offer some unique benefits, but when it comes to investing your time and energy, go with the compound movements.

  • Squats, deadlifts, and their variations. When it comes to lower body training, these are where your money needs to go. You can certainly include other exercises, but only for the sake of diversification. If you want a solid return, put your money here.
  • Lunges, and other single leg exercises. If squats and deadlifts are Netflix stock, then single leg movements are Apple stock. These movements will outperform most exercises for lower body strength, muscular development and conditioning. They will also diversify your exercise portfolio by providing some additional return in the form of stability, balance, and injury prevention.
  • Upper body pressing and pulling. Pressing and pulling movements cover your bases for the upper body. These include bench presses of all angles, overhead presses, pull-ups or lat pull downs, and all variations of rows. All of these movements can be done with either a barbell or dumbbells for a huge return on your time and energy investment, and will effectively train your entire upper body.
