That’s right. Someone’s gone and done this.
A company in Spain has genetically modified avocados to have 30% less fat than the original version.
And that leaves us with 2 questions:
1. Does low fat = better for you?
2. Do GMOs = danger?
Does less fat make them better?
Yes and no.
No, because fat is not the enemy.
But neither care carbs, or protein.
So making a food lower in fat doesn’t automatically make it healthier. Especially in the case of an avocado, which contains monounsaturated fat which can lower ‘bad’ cholesterol.
But also yes, because no matter how healthy fat may be, it still has 9 calories per gram.
And the biggest issue we’re facing when it comes to obesity and illness is this: we’re eating too many calories overall.
Bottom line: reducing the amount of fat in an avocado erases some of its superpowers, but also lowers its total calories.
This means it’s neither good nor bad.
It’s just weird. Which brings us to our next question.
Are GMOs dangerous?
As far as we know…. No, they aren’t (1)
But despite the fact that GMOs aren’t linked to any ill effects to our health, there’s still plenty of pushback from the public on this low-fat avocado situation.
Probably because it’s weird as hell.
But despite the oddity of the situation, as far as we know, genetically modifying our food doesn’t cause us any harm.
So, should you switch?
A low fat avocado isn’t necessarily healthier or unhealthier than its original version. And the genetic modifications don’t pose any threats to your health, so the answer is…
It’s up to you.
They might lack the rich creaminess we love about avocados. They might even taste like glass.
But if you like to eat a low-moderate fat diet, or if you’re looking to reduce your calorie intake, they will fit your diet a little easier than the original avocado.
What do you make of this low fat avocado? Will you try them out?
