Health coaching – the best thing since sliced bread or just another gimmicky buzzword? Studies show that it definitely leads towards the former! But why exactly should you opt for health coaching and – most importantly – will it work for you?
First things first, let’s get down to the science behind why health coaching is one of the best ways to achieve your health goals. I’m referencing two main studies here – the first one took a look at the wide implications of health coaching and how it can be applied to improve the general public’s health. In a one year study focusing on a health coaching smartphone application (just like Fitmo!), the majority of people improved their health significantly. More than half reduced their body weight, and most participants reduced their level of hypertension. Health coaching has even proven effective in reducing hospitalisations and healthcare costs – an amazing outcome considering the US spends 86% of healthcare funds on chronic conditions!
The other study proved essentially the exact same thing, using a mobile-phone-based health coaching service as an obesity health intervention. People actually gained weight without the health coaching, and significantly more lost weight as a consequence of health coaching! A significant number of participants also improved their blood pressure. This study also notes that due to people constantly having access to their phones, mobile-based interventions are an innovative way to get health coaching to the masses!
Now the scientific stuff is out of the way, here are the reasons why it works:
One of the key reasons health coaching works so well is the sense of accountability that a coach gives you! If you’re the kind of person who starts out with the best of intentions but ends up saying and never really doing, a coach is a perfect way to combat this – your coach won’t let you get away with missing workouts for no reason! With someone to answer to, you’ll be much less likely to skip out on workouts.
Just like regular personal training or nutrition counselling, health coaches are professionals that can help you gain control of your lifestyle. They’re certified to help you decide on the right goals for you and skilled at helping you achieve those goals with ease!
Who better to give you a kick up the butt when you need it? We all slack off from time to time – everyone has days where they don’t want to drag themselves to the gym! The great thing about an on-hand health coach is that they can give you a push forward, confidence boost or schedule change you need to get you raring to hit the gym. Keeping motivated ensures you stick to your workout schedule, which is exactly what you need in order to make exercise a habit!
