You have 2 masters in life: Pleasure and Pain.

Everything you do is to gain pleasure or avoid pain. And when you’re given the choice between the two, you’ll choose to avoid pain every time.

When I was a trainer up in Ottawa, Canada (about a decade ago), I was stuck in a rut. Actually, it was less of a rut and more of a destructive tailspin. I made an OK income, had a full roster of clients…. but I partied 4-5 nights a week. If I had a spare ten bucks, I bought a bottle of vodka and went out to a bar.

I knew this was destructive, and there would be great pleasure in pulling my shit together, but I didn’t. I didn’t because the pain of making changes overruled the pleasure of getting better. That is, until life kicked me in the teeth and forced me to make those changes.

One night I drank more than usual and, for reasons unknown, got in my car and started driving. I slid out of control and hit a guard rail at a break-neck speed. My car rolled over several times, and settled on it’s roof. I was lucky to walk away with a small cut on my wrist which I got when I crawled out of the drivers side window.

Once I was released from the hospital and went back to work, I was told I was fired. They said it was for some unrelated nonsense. I knew it was because I was a reckless human being they could no longer support.

That was the moment things flipped. Staying the same became more painful than changing.

This incident sparked new behaviors: waking up early to meditate, studying Psychology and Philosophy, and developing myself in a holistic way. These changes could have saved me from that whole mess, but I ignored them. I was too comfortable to be bothered.

If you’re lucky like I was, life will slam you upside the head and force you to make the changes you need. But most of us need to do it ourselves. If you want to get in shape, start a business, or make another healthy, positive change in your life, don’t wait for life to force it on you.

You need to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

When my sister was learning how to swim, she was petrified of putting her head under the water. In all my wisdom, I decided she should be going underwater by now. When she wasn’t expecting it I pushed her into the pool. Sure, she cried. But then she got over it, and guess what… She wasn’t afraid to go under water anymore.

If you really want to change the direction of your life, whether that means getting lean, strong and healthy or something else, you need to get out of your comfort zone.

In the case of you and your goals, comfort is the enemy.

Wake up at 4:00 a.m. to meditate, study, or learn a new skill.

Skip the Game of Thrones marathon and get to the gym after work.

Nothing good is going to happen inside your bubble. Comfort is the enemy.
