It’s not the calorie bombs that are the problem, it’s the small things that slip through the cracks and add up over time. The little things – they’re the key to fat burning nutrition.

​Six years ago I left Canada for Firefighting school in College Station, Tx.

Being a Canadian kid from a small town, I wasn’t used to American College towns. I certainly wasn’t used to all the cool bars and cheap alcohol.

I partied a lot. Evidently, I also spent a lot of money.

When I got home and looked at how much I spent, it blew my face off. I couldn’t believe it. I knew I hadn’t spent any large amounts of money in any one place.

But when I looked over my bank statements, I saw a long list of small transactions. $12.50 here, $7.75 there.

When I added them all up, the number was downright embarrassing. I’m talking many, many thousands of dollars spent on partying.

I literally urinated away the price of a car within 3 months.

What does this have to do with anything? Well, right now there are a lot of people concerned about the new Starbucks Unicorn drink.

If it’s not the unicorn drink, it’s the Baconator, or it’s the fact that McDonalds wants to make their Big Mac bigger.

But while we’re talking about how harmful the latest calorie bomb is, we’re also sabotaging our own progress on a daily basis.

It’s not the calorie bombs that are the problem, it’s the small things that slip through the cracks and add up over time.

Just like those tiny transactions devastated me financially, those small nutritional slips are the real opponent standing between you and that lean, strong, healthy body.

When you make a big purchase- you buy a car, a couch, or a house- you’re very much aware of the money you’re spending. But the $8 at Chipotle? You forget about that money before you digest your burrito.

Treating yourself to a calorie bomb like a Unicorn drink is like buying a car. You’re very mindful of the transaction. If you’re not, the bloat and nap you’ll need after will remind you.

It’s the small nutritional slips that add up and halt your progress. The quick stops at the donut shop because you have to get your kids off to school, the 2-3 beers at night, or the handful of Easter eggs after work.

So don’t worry about Unicorn drinks and Baconators. Actually, feel free to treat yourself to one now and then.

Instead, focus on the small, daily things. The details that are easily swept under the rug. The key to a lean, strong body lies in the details.
