You’re walking on a path, studded with millions of tiny diamonds. Pretty cool, right? The problem is, you don’t realize it. ​
You assume this path has a destination. And you feel like once you get to that destination, you’ve ‘made it.’
Therefore, you’re strolling past millions of diamonds, but you’re not giving them a second look. Instead, you’re anxiously anticipating your destination. Moving along with powerful strides. A focused look on your face, and the ever-present burn of anxiety in your chest.
You’re so focused on your destination that you’ve got tunnel vision. You can’t even see the diamonds anymore. And as much as you want to reach your destination, you’re not sure if you ever will.
The only thing you can see is the vast, gaping void between where you are now and where you want to be.
Every day you walk harder and faster, and every day your doubt grows bigger.
You’ve been walking for days, months… maybe years. The journey seems fruitless, and you are starting to wonder if you can keep this up. The constant focus on your destination, and more accurately, the fact that you aren’t there yet, is crushing.
The lesson here is, there is no destination. The fitness path you’re walking on is the destination. It’s studded with diamonds for crying out loud! This is the trap many of us fall into with our fitness goals. Your goal is the destination, and the path leads to your goal.

Now, I’m not saying that your goal is bad, or you’ll never get there. Goals are necessary, and they dictate the direction of your path. But once your fitness path is set, it’s crucial that you take your focus off your destination, and focus instead on the millions of diamonds along your path.
Maybe your goal is to lose 30 lbs so you can feel healthy and attractive again. That’s great.
But along the way, you’re going to encounter millions of diamonds:

The rush of endorphins as you finish the first workout on your new plan.

The thrill of seeing your body get strong enough to lift weights you didn’t think were possible for you.
The confidence you build by busting down obstacles on a daily basis, proving to yourself, I really can do this shit.
These diamonds come in many forms, and focusing on them is crucial for two reasons.
1. Whether or not you reach your goal is out of your hands, so focusing on your destination is pointless.
Sure, you can control your daily actions- the food you eat, the exercise you do, and the way you manage stress. But you can’t dictate the pace at which you body burns fat, builds muscle, and changes over all.
The only things you do control are your daily actions, and this is where those diamonds are found.
Instead of focusing on the destination, use that energy on the things you do control- your daily actions.

2. By focusing on your destination, all you can see is the gap between what you are, and what you want to be. I don’t care how solid you are, this is going to break you down over time. Instead of focusing on the gap between who you are and who you want to be, focus on the wins you experience on a daily basis. If they aren’t obvious at first, find them. They’re there, promise.

The game is all about momentum, and noticing those gems on a daily basis creates more of them, and that compounds over time.
One day you’ll look up, and you’ll have reached your goal.
And it will be because instead of white-knuckling it down your fitness path, focusing only on the destination, you focused on the millions of diamonds along the way. ​
