Mr Chiseled Everything – Why You Shouldn’t Compare Yourself To Others

It never fails.

As soon as your workouts start getting stronger… You hit your nutrition goals for weeks on end… And you’re ecstatic because you’re actually seeing progress…

Mr or Mrs. Chiseled Everything walks into the gym.

Your jaw hits the floor, and you stare as they walk across the room and load up a barbell.

Damn… Just when I thought I was doing well.

That happiness you felt as a result of your hard work and results? It’s gone. It’s been replaced with more of an “I suck at everything” feeling. It doesn’t matter how much progress we make. We still measure our success as it compares to others. Think about it in terms of money. You never miss a meal, you have a warm place to sleep, hot water to shower, a car, and a little extra cash for fun. You want for nothing. Until your neighbor gets the $120 Mercedes SUV. Now you want that level of success. Why? Because he has it.

Fitness is no different.

It doesn’t matter how far you’ve come. If someone’s gone further, you’re not happy.

This is a powerful tool, and can be used to drive us forward. But like any tool, it can also be used to beat ourselves up. Unfortunately, that’s usually how we use it.

When we compare ourselves to others, we’re using a busted measuring stick. We don’t know their story, how hard they train, how long they’ve been at it, or the sacrifices they’ve made. Comparing ourselves to anyone else is apples and oranges, in every case.

We know the “secret” to building your lean, strong body is consistency. You’ve got to keep showing up. But it’s impossible to keep showing up when you’re constantly beating yourself up.

Don’t compare yourself to others, especially Mr. and Mrs. Chiseled Everything, compare yourself to you. Because that’s the only measuring stick that makes sense.

Be better than you were yesterday. Be better tomorrow than you are today.

And for crying out loud, celebrate your wins!

Every time you see progress: pump your fist, unleash a battle cry, and bask in your glory. And just keep doing that. Forever.

You’ll make more progress, and you’ll have a lot more fun doing it.
