Maintaining a healthy diet on the road can be a challenge. Especially, during your summer vacation. Then again it is also a challenge to maintain a healthy bank balance during summer vacation. Going on holiday is meant to be a fun experience, it is a time when you get to relax and just enjoy yourself without having to worry about anything. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, there are a few rules I follow while I’m away from home.

They prevent me from dropping an atomic bomb of destruction on my diet goals. It can be so easy to lose focus on these goals whilst indulging on a fantastic holiday. One of my friends recently took advantage of one of the p&o late deals and couldn’t resist taking advantage of the free buffet that was on all day long!

1. Fasting aka skip breakfast and drink a lot of coffee

Skipping breakfast won’t kill you and it won’t send your body into starvation mode.

There are tons of studies that show the benefits of skipping breakfast. Everything from improved insulin level in your blood, increased growth hormone secretion, improved cellular repair, and improved brain function have all improved in those who fast.

You’ll have to deal with a few hunger pangs, at first.

Drinking coffee or green tea help to curb the hunger pangs caused by your hunger hormone, ghrelin.

Not only does caffeine have hunger blunting effects. But it also helps recruit fat from your fat cells for energy.

Who wouldn’t want to burn a little extra fat while on vacation?

One major benefit of skipping breakfast is that it allows you to save calories for lunch or dinner. Like that delicious plate of local spaghetti in Italy or a deep fried Snickers bar on the beach boardwalk.

If you’ve been dieting and eating less than 2,000 calories a day, skipping breakfast gives you more freedom with your later meals.

2. Only eat ONE bad meal a day

If you’re already skipping breakfast eating two meals a day makes this tip for “vacation eating” a little more manageable.

Allow yourself to have only ONE bad meal a day.

If you choose lunch, then have a sensible and healthy dinner. If you’re going to cut loose at dinner, then load up on the green veggies and protein at lunch.

For myself, I prefer to eat smarter earlier in the day and then allow myself to indulgence more at night. Boardwalk ice cream is the best.

3. Front Load Protein

If fasting isn’t for you, I suggest that you front load your protein.

Greek Yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, or a high protein omelet loaded with lean ground turkey, two eggs, and veggies will provide you with significant protein. You’ll feel more satiated through the morning and possible midday.

Make sure this first meal contains at least 70-80 grams of protein.

If you plan on drinking quite a bit on vacation, using this protocol will help keep you from diving head-first into boardwalk pizza late at night.

4. Don’t tell yourself “screw it, I’m on vacation.”

How many times have you been on vacation and told yourself, “oh it’s vacation, screw it!”

That four scoop monstrous ice cream cone was a good idea last night, but this morning, you’re regretting that decision.

Don’t become your own worst enemy and guilt yourself into eating something just to say you “tried it.”

If you want to eat a donut from a local establishment that you may never visit again, do it. If you don’t, then don’t.

Don’t let your family or friends guilt you into eating something you don’t want.

It’s okay for you to say, “no.”

Decided to not track your intake for the week?

That’s fine, but be mindful of what you’re consuming. And don’t throw up your hands and say, “It’s cool I am on vacation.”

No good comes from this statement.

Ain’t No Cure For Those Summertime Blues

Your vacation shouldn’t become an excuse for you to throw all caution to the wind and stuff your face with buffet item after buffet item. Vacations should be a time to enjoy your life and relax from the pressures of work or family. Vacations should be a time where you are having more fun.

Get outside and enjoy activities like hiking, swimming, riding a zip-line, or soaking up a few rays of sun!
